I know it’s supposed to be difficult…

…but REALLY!?

Date: Friday 26th August 2011
Venue: High Elms
Score: 127

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SEVEN SHOTS!

Still, at least I can look on two positives (although one is a slightly negative positive!):

  1. My short game was good. Only one offline chip, and an average of 2.3 putts.
  2. Bill had a FAR worse day than me (it seems more than a little mean to list it as a positive – but I’m desperate!)

There were some holes where I felt like I’d played adequately well, but then I added up the shots and found I’d scored an 8. Or rather, another 8.

FRONT NINE

HOLE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 OUT
Handicap 7 13 15 3 17 1 5 11 9
Par 4 4 4 4 3 4 4 3 5 35
Score 7 7 6 9 7 7 8 5 8 64

BACK NINE

HOLE 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 IN
Handicap 4 18 14 2 8 12 16 6 10
Par 4 4 5 3 4 4 3 4 5 36
Score 8 7 7 4 7 7 6 7 10 63

So, there’s a bogey in there, and three double-bogeys but everything else is at least three over.

The problem? Well if I knew that…OK, more grown up response: I think it’s that when I hit good tee or fairway shots (meaning not fat/scuffed/sideways) they generally had no distance to speak of. An average of 125 yards but ranging from three tee shots of between 102 and 105 yards to a high of 180 yards (with three others in the 130s). And that doesnt take in to account some tee shots so short they weren’t worth recording (e.g. about 70 yards on the 3rd tee).

So, I guess I need to work on tee and fairway shots now. But I’m starting to feel like practice on the range, i.e. off mats, is misleading in the sense that the experience of hitting such shots off real turf, even if the turf is only in contact with your feet when on the tee, is SO different.

Still, there’s little alternative. So one must stop whinging and make the best of it.
