A Lovely Evening

VENUE: Bromley Golf Centre
ACTIVITY: Practice

It’s been a very frustrating few weeks with my back playing up. But recently I’ve been feeling just about good enough to give it a go, and I’m due to play Bill tomorrow night anyway so it was time to have a practice session.

I was particularly interested in trying out bunker shots, partly from having read an article in Golf World magazine, but also fuelled by recent poor bunker player.

So, I was generally managing to get the ball out quite well, although it felt like I was getting too much of the ball, but if I can hit the ball rather than the sand and still get the ball out then that can’t be all bad, can it?

That was followed by short game practice on and around the practice green. Chipping wasn’t great, but the flop shots were fun and putting was time well spent.

Then another 50 balls in the main range. Started with 7 irons shots, which were pretty good (actually, some were very good), then a few driver shots, then in to the pretending-to-play-some-real-holes (play a tee shot, estimate how far that would be on the fairway, then play another shot and imagine where it ends up, etc., until you think you’ve got the ball on the green). The last approach is an important thing to do as it closely resembles a real game, rather than the repetition of the same shot over and over.

It’s nice to be back. Hopefully these aches and pains I’m getting now (and odd knot in my left shoulder is a new one!) calm down by tomorrow.

You seem to have regressed after the back injury. The fact that you have managed to play a few rounds indicates your are well enough to give it a go now and again.

Are you performing any exercises or undergoing continued therapy?

Also, were your hands affected? Not much blogging activity lately. 😉

Well, there certainly is some regression, yes. Almost all my shots are going to the right. Even the drives that start well suddenly bite just before the apex of the flight then veer off, so something is clearly not right.

My back is holding up well, I think, so back to the lessons.

The main reason for lack of play over the last few weeks has more to do with general busy-ness (including a 10-day business trip to Hong Kong) and poor weather so it’s just as likely the poor play is due to infrequent activity as it is to do with a technical fault.

Still, as you rightly hinted, there is SOME activity to blog about! Wrist slapped.
